At last we have started the first school. The drive out was rugged. A good four-wheel drive track over 1 1/4 hours. Fantastic countryside though and lots to see. Rice has just been harvested here and the farmers are collecting in the straw, chopping it with machines and layering it over wooden frames as feed for cattle. These frames are right next to their homes. Most homes in this area are made of brick, some covered in a mud layer. This is the only region in Nepal where bricks are made. Children were making their way to school, each wearing their uniforms proudly. There were two main schools we passed, the second being a private Christian School. Children at this school had all white uniforms and the boys wore ties - a little impractical for the environment. On the way home, we noticed that the uniforms were no longer white!
Upon arrival at the school, we had the opportunity to meet and greet some of the people who had come, some for three or more hours by foot, bicycle or motorbike. The women wear such colourful outfits, many wearing a scarf over their head. In the meeting hall, women were on the left and men on the right. We packed into the meeting place, floor space only, where we were honoured with marigold wreaths and given seats up the front on the stage. It is quite a humbling experience to receive this welcome, especially since we have very little to offer. We have come to serve, but only to support John and be there to be used by God.
Over the course of the day, many were touched. It was wonderful to see how quickly we connected. Dave practiced his grandad skills with some of the local children. Many of us were able to minister to people who experienced something of his power.
This was a fantastic day, with lots of stories. Tomorrow should be even more interesting!
